Chemical Composition
Structure: Diamond is made by having a tetrahedral 3-Dimensional lattice structure of a carbon atom covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms. This structure results physical properties like the natural hardness and thermal conductivity of diamond.
Figure 2: Structure of crystallized carbon in diamond form. Found from ("HyperPhyiscs").
Natural or Synthetic?: Diamond can be both natural or synthetic. They both look the same under normal conditions, light and magnification. Real and natural diamonds are found naturally from inside the Earth. Fake diamonds are created and manufactured in a laboratory or factory rather than mined from the Earth. Synthetic diamonds are made from a process called High Pressure High Temperature, ("The Difference Between Real and Synthetic Diamonds"). Real diamonds are formed by high pressure and temperatures that occur in Earth’s mantle about 100 miles down. A lot of the diamonds that have been discovered today have been brought to the surface by deep-source eruptions. They began in the mantle and worked their way up, tearing pieces of mantle rock to the Earth’s surface. These mantle blocks contain diamonds that are formed from the high temperatures and pressure from the mantle, ("Diamond").
